“Uncertain Steps” refers to the stress and confusion that is felt by teens as they are pushed to come up with a specific path to pursue after high school graduation. Bombarded with the question “What are you going to do with your life?” and yet afraid to make a mistake in such a “lifelong” decision, they have difficulty taking a step in any direction to further explore possible options. Instead, they make poorly thought out choices or jump on the bandwagon and follow everyone else.
Alan Bergquist, the author of Uncertain Steps, isn’t a guidance counselor or a career counselor. He isn’t a psychologist or a certified life planner. In fact, he isn’t an official “expert” at all. First and foremost, he’s a father….a father of two teenage daughters rapidly approaching these very decisions themselves.
As he watches his daughters grow up in a globally connected, technology driven world much different than the one that existed when he was making these decisions about life after high school, it became obvious that it will take a much different approach to finding a path in life than what he was familiar with.
“Uncertain Steps” is the beginning of a process of communicating what he has found over the last several years, as well as encouraging collaboration between teens, parents, educators and others concerned to discuss these topics. Through this collective effort, all parents will have better ways to guide their teens through this process, taking one step at a time.
